Excerpt from Muhammad Ali’s letter to the Vice Principal.

I had a meeting with the Consul General, Geoffrey Berg at the British High Commission in Toronto, on 6th May. It was a simple ceremony I was congratulated by the Consul General who handed me my cheque (Canadian Dollar equivalent of pounds 1500) and the certificate.

It has been a pleasure studying at Arab Unity School and an honor being your student. It is only due to Mrs. Taher’s and your efforts that I stood a chance to be awarded this scholarship which

will now help me in my future endeavors and in realizing my dream. Keep up the good work.

The Management, Staff and Students feel proud of Muhammad Ali’s achievement and wish him good luck in his future.

Dubai school gets Fellowship Centre status from UK-based institution Khaleej Times Daily, 3rd Oct 2002,

Staff reporter

THE Arab Unity School (AUS) in Dubai has been awarded Fellowship Centre status by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE, UK), one of the world's leading providers of educational qualifications and assessments, in recognition of the school's continuous collaboration with CIE

An existing CIE Centre for 12 years, AUS becomes the first school out of 300-odd British Curriculum schools in the Middle East to get the recognition. AUS will continue to offer local students a comprehensive portfolio of CIE qualifications that are recognized and accepted by educational institutions and employers across the globe, Paul Lewis, CIE's Regional Director for Middle East and North Africa, announced in Dubai yesterday, at the opening of the four-day Teacher Training Workshops organized by CIE at the school.

The Fellowship status was awarded in recognition of the school's loyalty to Cambridge assessments, its quality of provision, assistance with a number of highly successful teacher training events in the region and willingness to help CIE develop its centre support services.

Mr. Lewis expressed happiness on the school's achievement. "Having worked closely with the school for many years, we wanted to officially recognize the relationship with us. Fellowship status rewards the efforts and initiative of staff throughout the organization, enabling the school and CIE to deliver a truly valued education service to the local community," he said.

Mrs. Z. A. Taher, principal of AUS said the CIE Fellowship status certainly is an incentive to raise our standards. "I am proud to say that 550 students will appear for the forthcoming examination in May/June 2003." Established in 1974, AUS caters to over 3,000 students drawn from the expatriate and local community. In 1985, the school started preparing students for the British based (O and A Level) Examinations and became an approved Centre for conducting the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and CIE examinations in 1990.

The current workshop which opened yesterday and will conclude on October 5, aims at familiarizing teachers with latest teaching techniques to make teaching more effective in schools. It concludes on Saturday.

Cambridge body gives 'fellowship status' to school
Gulf News, 3rd October 2002, Staff Reporter

The Arab Unity School yesterday became the first school in the Middle East to obtain the "Fellowship Centre" status from Cambridge International Examinations.

"This is an endorsement and recognition of our status as a quality education provider," said Arwa Taher, the school's Vice Principal and Managing Partner.

Part of the University of Cambridge, the institution is one of the world's leading providers of international qualifications and assessments.

Arab Unity School has been a CIE centre for 12 years, producing a large number of students appearing for the International General Certificate for Secondary Education and A-Level examinations with a 100 per cent passing rate, according to Arwa.

With the fellowship status, it will continue to offer local students a portfolio of CIE qualifications tests recognized and accepted by educational institutions and employers worldwide.

Paul Lewis, the Cambridge institution's Regional Director for Middle East and North Africa, said: "We worked closely with the Arab Unity School for many years. We wanted to officially recognize their relationship with us.

"Fellowship status rewards the efforts and initiative of staff throughout the organization, enabling Arab Unity School and CIE to deliver a truly valued education service to the community."

IT CHALLENGE AWARD

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research had organized an IT challenge wherein schools, colleges and organizations could participate by submitting IT related projects.
The Arab Unity School submitted two projects.

a. School Management System done in Visual Basic by Ms. Nargis Shaukat and guided by our A- Level teachers
b. School Web done in Macromedia Flash by Master Sami Tariq and guided by our A-level teachers

There were 239 entries from all over the U.A.E. AUS was nominated as a finalist in the Secondary School category project. The Final presentation and exhibition was held on 6th April at the Emirates Towers. There were 30 jury members and the projects were judged according to international criteria.

AUS bagged the first prize in the Secondary School Project category. H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan graced the occasion with his presence and awarded the prizes. It was an eventful day for AUS and our joy knew no bounds.

A lot of effort, dedication and hard work had gone into these projects both by our students and faculty. But this is not the end. These finalists will have an opportunity to present their projects at the international IT challenge to be held in Stockholm later this year.

At this juncture, we are proud to announce that CIE, University of Cambridge has launched a new web-site which will be effective from May 2002. AUS is the first centre to use the new web-site. This will provide a speedy access to navigation, site layout and effectiveness for school use.
